SUMMARY
Integral member of United Community’s Legal Department, working to ensure United Community complies with its legal obligations and provides timely guidance to internal clients. Performs variety of technical functions that may include responding to questions from branch personnel, answering subpoenas and other requests for information, and addressing garnishments and levies. Will be involved in confidential matters of great sensitivity to United Community, its customers and employees. Must be trustworthy, conscientious, and discrete. Must exercise good judgment and be assertive enough to escalate matters that could expose United Community to legal or reputational harm.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience in banking, legal or related field required
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Highly efficient and able to perform full-range of Legal Specialist functions
- Discrete; able to maintain confidentiality and work on highly-sensitive matters
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and utilizing bank systems
- Extraordinary attention to detail, accuracy, and conscientiousness in completing job functions
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to fluently discuss technical aspects of job functions
- Service-oriented, with natural inclination to treat external customers and co-workers from other departments with respect and kindness
- Comfortable working under time-pressure
- Curious and willing to learn new functions
- Diligently participate and complete all required compliance training, including Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money laundering training, as well as internal, external and online training programs, meetings, etc.
JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assisting with branch support inquiries, including technical guidance to branch personnel regarding account opening and related matters
- Receiving, logging, and responding to court orders, garnishment, and levies
- Implementing appropriate garnishment and levy-related account holds and accurately coordinating payments to applicable government agencies
- Receiving, logging, and responding to subpoenas and other requests for information, including detailed searches of various bank systems and frequent communication with law enforcement and external litigants regarding deadlines and responsive documentation
- Working directly with United Community’s internal and external counsel in connection with garnishment, levy, and subpoena-related activities
- Performing archived email searches and other research in support of discovery for litigation
- Expeditiously receiving and responding to legal complaints
- Reconciliation of the department’s general ledger items, checking accounts and/or credit cards

Reconciliation of IOLTA accounts for submission of interest reports to state bar foundations
- Administrative tasks, including ordering Legal Department supplies
- Detailed compliance with Legal Department procedures
- Escalating matters that expose the bank to significant legal or reputational risk
- Training and mentoring less-seasoned members of the Legal Specialist team
- Other related duties as assigned
