Director of Human Resources (HR) is a professional position that is part of the Administrative team and the incumbent serves on Rise’s Senior Leadership Team. Development and stewardship of a strong and diverse staff team and organizational culture is critical to our missional success. The Director of Human Resources reports to Rise’s Executive Director on HR related matters. The role currently supervises no staff and will serve as lead consultant to staff performing HR-related work. 

 

Essential Duties

 

Recruitment and Staffing

  • Ensure that talent acquisition processes and procedures meet organizational needs.
  • Lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding processes for all school positions, including teachers, administrators, and support staff.
  • Maintain up-to-date job descriptions and manage the application, interview, and selection process.
  • Lead efforts to build and maintain an inclusive, diverse workforce.

Employee Relations

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for faculty and staff regarding HR-related issues and concerns.
  • Provide guidance and counsel on workplace conflict resolution, performance issues, and employee relations matters.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on complex and confidential HR challenges in ways that safeguard the organization while also upholding equity and honoring staff.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Oversee payroll, compensation analysis, and benefits administration.
  • Partner with the Executive Director to provide health benefits to employees through annual Open Enrollment and year round customer service
  • Administer employee benefits programs (e.g., health insurance, retirement plans, leave policies).
  • Perform compensation analysis to keep salaries and positions reasonably aligned with the market
 

Performance Management

  • Implement and oversee a performance management practice for the organization and provide ongoing support to managers and employees to engage in two-way feedback.
  • Assist school leadership in developing employee training and professional development programs.

Compliance and Legal Matters

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local labor laws, including regulations on employment discrimination, wage and hour laws, and workplace safety.
  • Maintain personnel records and ensure proper documentation and confidentiality.
  • Manage annual employee training on key compliance topics such as harassment prevention, safety, and diversity.
  • Stay current on trends and changes in employment law and make recommendations for policy updates as needed.

Policy Development and Implementation

  • Develop, update, and enforce the Rise HR policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with the school’s mission, values, and legal requirements.
  • Ensure Rise maintains a comprehensive employee handbook and that all staff are informed about HR policies and expectations.
  • Create and implement strategies to enhance employee engagement and retention.

Professional Development and Workplace Culture

  • Identify needs for professional development and coordinate training opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Work with the executive director to plan and execute staff-wide communication and events that reinforce Rise’s values (including our faith-based identity), facilitate professional development, and foster a stronger sense of community across the whole organization.
 

HR Strategy and Leadership

  • Advise and collaborate with the Head of School/Executive Director and other senior leadership to align HR strategy with the school’s goals and objectives.
  • Participate in strategic planning and decision-making as a member of the senior leadership team.
  • Monitor and report on HR metrics (e.g., turnover rates, hiring statistics, employee satisfaction).

Required Qualifications

  • Faith in Jesus Christ, affirming the Apostles Creed and lived out in a faith community
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field
  • At least 5 years professional HR generalist experience in at least three of the following areas: hiring, salary administration, policy development, performance management, benefits administration and employee relations
  • Demonstrated ability to advise and consult with a diverse staff team of senior leaders, managers, and employees on HR matters
  • Strong project management skills with flexibility to adapt to change
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skill
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • HR certification (SHRM, HRCI, or IPMA-HR)
  • HR Coordinator, Lead Worker, or Supervisor experience
  • Experience working in programs or organizations that serve the East End and/or employ students, youth, young adults

Position Overview & Compensation

  • Full-time, minimum of 40 hours/week, overtime exempt. 
  • Salary is negotiable and commensurate with skills and experience. The anticipated range of compensation for this position is $52,000-$65,000. We offer competitive health insurance plans with dependent care, parental leave, personal days, and more.
  • It is our expectation that the person hired to fill this position will work from our administrative offices, located at 2010 Carlisle Dr, Richmond VA  with standard Monday through Friday business hours and occasional evening or weekend work as required to meet the needs of the role. While on site work is required to succeed in this role, flexibility to work remotely occasionally is possible.
