Summary:
The Compliance Specialist is responsible for overseeing the EMS regulatory compliance of the organization. The ideal candidate will possess great interpersonal and critical thinking skills. They must operate with a high level of integrity and confidentiality. They must be able to multi-task and prioritize various projects simultaneously and possess stellar objective investigative skills. The Compliance Specialist is responsible for keeping up to date with changes in the industry to ensure the organization is adhering to regulations, laws, and guidelines for governmental entities. The Compliance Specialist will create reports for upper management showing where there may be gaps in the organization’s Compliance and HIPAA Plan and suggest changes or new procedures for employees to follow.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
• Demonstrates complete knowledge, understanding, and compliance of company policies and procedures.
• Responsible for maintaining security and privacy of all company and patient information at all times in accordance HIPAA and all other applicable local, state and federal regulations.
• Responsible for monitoring the company is in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations and ordinances particularly those related to EMS operations in each state.
• Coordinates and assist with the development of plans and training materials for correcting non‐compliant items identified.
• Responsible for monitoring and ensuring all field staff complete all company and government required clinical education to maintain certifications.
• Maintains security and privacy of all confidential and proprietary company information at all times in accordance with company policy.
• Responsible for responding to, documenting, reporting on, investigating and following up on all complaints and/or incident reports as directed by the CCO.
• Overseeing follow-up and, as applicable, resolution of investigations and other issues generated by the compliance program, including development of corrective action plans, as needed.
• Ensure compliance programs effectively prevent and/or detect violations of law, regulations, organization policies, or the code of conduct.
• Ensure that the internal controls are capable of preventing and detecting significant instances or patterns of illegal, unethical, or improper conduct by employees, agents, affiliated providers, or others working with the company.
• Ensure compliance policies are updated annually and comply with all local, state and federal regulations and ordinances.
• Regularly review the compliance program and recommend appropriate revisions and modifications, including advising Director of Compliance and CCO of potential compliance risk areas.
• Developing and implementing, with approval of Director of Compliance and CCO, an annual review of an update to the compliance plan.
• Responsible for developing, implementing and completing monthly and annual Compliance Report to the CCO.
• Manage third party service providers relating to compliance; prepare schedules and supporting documentation to assist with the preparation of reports to the CCO.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
• Must be a licensed RN or Paramedic
• Certified Compliance Officer or ability to obtain in 6 months.
• Certified Privacy Officer or ability to obtain in 12 months.
• Must have the ability to function as a leader evaluating, coaching, training, and directing billing and operational staff.
• History of effective management in the EMS industry
• Strong computer skill including advanced Excel, experience with Intacct software a plus
• This role will require extensive travel, as needed, to conduct on-site reviews and assist with investigations.
