This position, within our IT Enterprise Services Program (ITES) serves as the expert technical lead for the agency-wide Microsoft end point configuration manager (MECM) system and the third party patching tool. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting this large, complex and technical, agency-wide system and ensuring its good ongoing health and viability. This system is used to manage the deployment of software and security for multiple agency-wide applications and end point devices such as servers and all L&I computers. This position is responsible for managing and maintaining all tasks for the MECM system which includes designing, planning & coordinating the installation, testing, implementing, operating, maintaining and configuring the MECM system. This work requires the incumbent to work independently on all levels of assignments.

This position will apply advanced knowledge of a wide range of technology to lead the agency’s patch management process for clients and servers. This includes the timely deployment of patches and relevant updates to ensure the security, stability, and performance of Labor and Industries information technologies services.

Additionally, the incumbent will manage the agency’s computing environment by providing consultation, analysis, design, configuration and integration for the client computing environment. This position applies expert level client computing knowledge to resolve complex technical problems for the computing systems infrastructure services and client applications, operating systems, and hardware.


Duties


Some of what you will be doing:

  • Lead administrator and engineer for the agency’s Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM), including:
    • Independently responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining L&I’s Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM) platform. 
    • Serves as the agency expert and point of contact representing the team with MECM Platform & the agency’s 3rd party patching tool. Monitoring issues and helps to determine root cause based on information obtained from applications, servers, network, other systems logs and potentially other technologies and products 
    • Solely responsible for ensuring MECM clients are installed and running as needed on the agency’s 4,000 plus endpoints 
    • Create and manage application deployment objects for new and existing software
    • Ensure the agency’s third party patching system is operating as needed
  • Client workstations and server patch management, including:
    • Solely responsible for leading and coordinating the release of system patching that include critical updates and service packs, for the agency’s clients and servers. 
    • Independently responsible for ensuring the agency’s clients and servers are staying current on all available manufacturer patches. 
    • Responsible for deploying security patches on short notice as needed for the agency.
    • Manages the strategy and coordination of IT teams to conduct thorough testing of patches in a controlled environment, such as our testing and pre-production environments 
  • Provides tier 3 support, for client computing hardware and software, including the Windows operating systems, and its integration to the agency’s applications and hardware, including:
    • Resolves agency wide tier 3 client computing trouble-tickets that cannot be resolved by the tier 1 or tier 2 technicians. 
    • Leads and or works with problem management teams, using agency standard processes. 
    • Serves as an expert technical for developing and troubleshooting procedures used by all technicians. 
    • Utilizes sophisticated trouble shooting tools and techniques, like task manager, Windows logging, Windows Sys internals, Wireshark and others. 
    • Works directly with agency vendors and manufactures when needed
  • Secondary technical engineer for packaging and deployment of L&I approved software and applications to L&I’s client computers and servers both on premise and in the cloud environments, including:
    • Assists with the configuration/packaging and deployment of agency core applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, Java, etc. 
    • Assists with the technical process for configuration/packaging and deployment of agency exception software. 
    • Helps ensures the proper life cycle management for applications and software are attained.
  • Secondary systems administration and operational support, including:
    • Works with the lead systems administrators to assist in managing and maintaining system standards and functionality. 
    • Responsible for supporting day to day activities when needed for managing multiple systems
    • Assists in system upgrades and configuration changes.


Qualifications

• You must have direct and progressive experience supporting a Microsoft Windows client computing environment comprised of 100+ customers in a multi-tier network environment (i.e. includes client, server, LAN/WAN, and centralized web services), OR integrating new hardware, software (such as operating system) and incorporating changes into an organizations standard computing environment., AND meet at least one of the following specified life experience or educational criteria:

  • Option 1: a minimum of Eight (8) years’ of direct and consecutive professional IT experience (A combination of education and IT experience.)
  • Option 2:  an associate’s degree in information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration or a closely related field AND six (6) years of direct and consecutive professional IT experience.
  • Option 3:  a bachelor’s degree in information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration or a closely related field AND four (4) years of direct and consecutive professional IT experience.
In addition to one of the above, the following are also required (and may be concurrent with the combined total of 8 years experience): 

  • A minimum of four (4) years’ of progressive experience and knowledge in the following areas: 
    • In a formal IT environment managing, and processing documented and tracked trouble tickets and service requests assigned to you, and independently doing the work to complete and close assigned service tickets.
    • Microsoft Active Directory, and having a thorough understanding of Active Directories structure, protocols, and services with operating systems and software patching
    • With operating systems and software patching, using advanced diagnostic tools to analyze and resolve complex client computing hardware and software problems 
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience utilizing and supporting an application packaging system and software distribution system
Desired:
  • Knowledge and understanding of the importance of teamwork.   • Working knowledge of Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM) for application deployment.
  • Experience administering or knowledge of enterprise desktop computers and servers security with a centrally managed administrative console. This should include administering data security and/or endpoint security such as personal firewalls, hard drive encryption, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of project management processes. Able to apply these processes to assigned projects.
