Recruitment Range: $51,616 - $75,000

The Office of Internal Audit is an independent appraisal function designed to examine and evaluate agency activities, to add value and improve operations. The program assists management in the accomplishment of its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve effectiveness of risk management, internal control, security and governance processes. The Office of Internal Audit will provide analyses, recommendations, consultations, and information concerning the activities reviewed which enables management to be more effective in meeting its business objectives.

This position will assist the audit director by planning and performing audits, reviews, assessments and internal investigations while applying auditing and accounting principles, practices and standards; and in reviewing the effectiveness and efficiency of agency and program operations and service delivery. Responsibilities include independently examining and analyzing risks, internal controls, moderately complex reports, records, financial statements, and/or operational, financial, accounting and/or information technology systems for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to guidelines and statutes.

This position will be based at 700 Wade Ave., Raleigh, NC. Depending on business need and job suitability, this position may be a candidate for telework, subject to management approval. This position may require some overnight travel to participate in trainings, conferences, and workgroups.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of auditing principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting audits, such as financial and compliance in accordance with relevant standards. This includes examining invoices, contracts, journals, ledgers, computations and other related business documents.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to governmental programs audited and maintenance of financial records.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing the validity of accounting records.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Experience managing confidential matters.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated experience ensuring the integrity of information systems.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a discipline related to a program area within the agency, and two years of audit experience; or 
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field and certification/licensure as a certified internal auditor, certified fraud examiner, certified information system auditor; certified public accountant with an audit focus; or other audit certification/license and two years of audit experience; or 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience
